2017 was the first time Mornington Peninsula Brewery has entered the RACV Victorian Tourism Awards. Surrounded by seasoned entrants that had been part of the Awards for years, Mornington wasn't expecting much. In a category such as Victorian Tourism Wineries, Distilleries & Breweries, where there are so many world-class businesses within these industries in our state, Managing Director, Matt Bebe and the Mornington team were absolutely blown away when they were awarded the Bronze Trophy. Mornington Peninsula Brewery has always been heavily focused on supporting where we live, the Mornington Peninsula, through all facets of the business and it is a great gift to be acknowledged for the work the team puts in.
Beleura our Berliner Weisse, ‘The Champagne of the North’ is a distinguished sour wheat style ale from Berlin. After delivering crisp apple and fresh lime aromas we decided to further age some of it for 3 months in French Oak Pinot Noir barrels. This added a depth of complexity producing spicy cinnamon, apple pie and baked rhubarb flavours. Spritzy carbonation coupled with a palate cleansing acidity make these beers a perfect refreshment. Channel 9's popular travel show Postcards recently visited the Mornington Peninsula Brewery, to have a chat with Managing Director, Matt Bebe, about how the brewery started back in 2010 and how it has continued to sky-rocket ever since. Presenter Bec Judd interviewed Matt over a schooner of Mornington Pale and a few tasty wood-fired pizzas. The episode, which will include other iconic Peninsula attractions, will air sometime in 2018.
New England IPA's have become an increasingly popular style of beer in the last 6-12 months, with Australians catching the apparently highly contagious 'haze-craze' from our American friends. New England IPA's (NEIPA for short) are characterised by their cloudy, sometimes downright murky appearance caused by additional proteins added to the brew. The result from this addition is that the hop profile of the beer is changed, removing much of the bitterness from the hops while retaining the aromatic, fruity and floral characteristics. Early in 2017 Mornington released Jiffy Squid, our take on the New England IPA style. We then followed that up with Coffee Squid and Squid Rising. Timing can be a big part of getting the optimal flavour and enjoyment out of a beer. Hop-forward beers are best when they are fresh. As hoppy beers age, such as Mornington Pale or IPA, the hop profile can drop in intensity, losing some of the amazing floral and fruity aromas and flavours of the hops that make these styles so sought after. Other styles such as Porters and Stouts can be aged to bring out some of the more subtle flavours. Portsea Hotel is an iconic landmark with spectacular views across Port Phillip Bay, a vast beer garden and equally enormous, multi-tiered inside. Free brewery tours run every Saturday at 4 pm at the Mornington Brewery Bar. Individual groups must be 6 people or less. For larger groups, please email firstname.lastname@example.org. Tours consist of a guided tour throughout the Watt Road brewery and shares how beer is produced. We also include a sampling of our regular Pale, Brown and IPA. The tour takes approximately 30 minutes depending on group size.
